Being in the heart of the ancient Mayan Civilization, Belize is blessed with numerous Mayan sites found throughout the country.
The Cayo District is home to several ceremonial and trading centers including Xunantunich, Cahal Pech, El Pilar and of course Caracol. Any or all of these are well worth a visit and easily accessible, however, Caracol is located in the Mountain Pine Ridge which takes a little more time (see Mountain Pine Ridge). Xunantunich is located in the village of San Jose Succotz just before reaching Benque Viejo on the Guatemalan border. Cahal Pech is located in San Ignacio and overlooks the city and neighboring Santa Elena, and also the Macal River. El Pilar is located near the village of Bullet Tree Falls.
Lower Dover has its own small Mayan ruins. Our site has at least three groups of structures with the tallest being approximately 30-35 feet tall.
Tikal, the destination of many Mayan enthusiasts, is in neighboring Guatemala. The round trip can be made in one day with adequate planning and it’s well worth the effort. A side trip to Flores is included in most excursions.
As a side note, Lower Dover is associated with the Northern Vaca Plateau Geoarchaeological Project. The ongoing research effort is lead by Dr. Phillip Reeder. The project's fieldwork began in 1989.
